In 1995, he became an associate professor at the Institute of Photographic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), where he was promoted as a professor in 1996. Then he moved to the Institute of Chemistry, CAS, in 1999 and served as the institute Vice Director from 2000 to 2008.

Prof. Yao has published more than 350 papers in scientific journals, including Nature, Chem. Soc. Rev., Acc. Chem. Res., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Adv. Mater., Chem. Commun., etc. His papers have been cited over 6000 times. Prof. Yao had been a member of the editorial board of <Journal of Materials Chemistry> (2007-2009) and <New Journal of Chemistry> (2011-2012). Since 2007, he served as associate editor-in-chief for <Acta Chimica Sinica>, <Acta Physico-Chimica Sinica> and <Imaging Science and Photochemistry>.

Prof. Yao is a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 2005, and a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, U. K., since 2008. Since 2008, he also served as the Vice President of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). He was elected as the Chairman of the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS) in 2010.
